For our cycling tour today we chose a road that ends somewhere in a very small town. After that town there is only a mountainbike trail that continues.
Therefore we hoped that there would not be too much traffic.
We started in Maspalomas and cycled up to the small town El Tablero. From there we continued the road GC604. The traffic became less and less and after a few kilometres we were the only people on the road. That was great. Behind us was the blue ocean and the sky and in front of us we could see the mountains of the island.
We came to a point with an old barrack and a mast. There we had a first break. After looking at our map we thought that the road should end soon. But when
we continued cycling we realized that it was not over yet. The road continued for about another 6 kilometres and it went steep up the hill.
But after about 25 kilometres cycling uphill we reached the end of the road. The road gave us a great view of the barranco on its left and we saw many interesting plants on the way. But what we saw when the mountainbike trail began was amazing. On a field next to the road were two white horses. They were just standing there, eating and looking at us. Without a fence. That was very beautiful.
We decided to continue the mountainbike trail for a while. After some metres it started to go uphill again. And after a few kilometres we were in the middle of
a wonderful forest. On our way we saw many huge fir cones. The forrest smelled very good and it was a lot of fun to cycle on this bumpy trail. So we continued to
cycle up to a lake called embalse de chira. From there the path started to go downhill, so we decided to leave it for today and cycle back to our bungalow.

The descent back to the beach was lots of fun, because we didn't have to do anything except sitting on the saddle and holding the handle bar 🙂

During dinner we decided that this was the best bike tour on Gran Canaria we had done so far!

In November 2011 we wanted to give it another try. It was very dry and therefore the river which blocked us last time from continuing was gone.
Therefore we stated again in Maspalomas and cycled to the quarry. There we followed the path into the barranco de Fataga. The road was quite bumpy, but it was fun with the mountainbikes. The path starts flat but becomes steeper after a while. After about 600m difference in altitude we had a great view of the underlying barranco. From there the path stayed at one height and we enjoyed cycling through this great nature! You have a wonderful view from up there. After about 3 hours we started the descent to Ayagaures. There we enjoyed the view of the lake and continued to cycle up the road. Before the descent we had a break and enjoyed the view of the path we came down a few minutes ago. Then we started to cycle to road back down to Maspalomas. During this descent you get a great view of Maspalomas and the beach, the lighthouse and the surrounding buildings.
This is a really great cycling tour we can recommend to everybody who wants to enjoy the great landscape of Gran Canaria!

Today we started to cycle along the coast road in the direction of Puerto de Mogan.
But at Arguineguin we left the coast road and continued on a smaller road to Soria.
The road went through a nice barranco. In the beginning it was only a little bit steep, but when we came closer to Soria it became very steep, up to 14%, for about 4 kilometres. When we arrived at the lake we had a break and enjoyed the view around.

The way back to the coast road was very easy and quick. Nevertheless we had to be careful during the many turns to not be hidden by a car. When we were back on the coast road we decided to stop at one of the many bays that are close to the road.
There we spent about one hour laying in the sunshine enjoying the sound of the ocean in front of us.

Today we plan to make cycle through Gran Canaria's backend. We start in Playa del Ingles where you can rent bikes at 'Free Motion' (close to the hotel Sandy Beach)
The weather is at its best 🙂
We follow the road until we come to a stone pit. Then we keep to the right. The tarred road turns into a trail (we ignored the "explosive" sign - probably not a big deal for non-germans... but we had a little discussion 🙂 )... After 20 minutes the trail is crossed by a creek. Probably there has once been a bridge... We decided to walk through the creek... it was a quite refreshing 🙂
The trail continued for a while. Then the trail turned into something what might be called a river bed.

We carried our bikes for a while, hoping that the trail would come back soon. The weather was very nice - and hot 🙂

Unfortunately, that was not the case... so we decided to take a break and capitulate today.

Annotation: during our next holiday on Gran Canaria the river was gone (it was later in the year) and we could see that the trail continues. But we had no time to cycle it to the end.. but we will do so in November 2011!

Today we start at Playa del Ingles taking the bus no. 30 to "Bahia Feliz". Bahia Feliz is part of the commune San Bartolome de Tirajana and approximately has 175 citizens.
A big building there is the Orquidea hotel. We get off the bus and cross the main street (which is parallel to the highway) using the nearby footbridge. We directly reach the bus stop on the opposite side (N 27° 47.145, W 015° 30.992).

A few meters further we follow the sign "Cantera" (stone pit). First, we cross the highway using a short tunnel. Leaving the tunnel we come to a junction - we decide to take the straight way (N 27° 47.260, W 015° 30.830).

We follow the path, passing two small buildings (N 27° 47.147, W 015° 30.988). We follow the path down the hill and turn left until we come to another junction. To the right we see a dam. The left path leads us deeper into the barranco.

Left and right huge walls loom large. After maybe a 30 minutes walk the street comes to an end. We decide to take a break, here.

From here a fixed rope route starts ("La Primera Luna" - The first moon). To the right a small path (maybe not even a path) leads to an overhang. There turn right and go around the corner. This is where the fixed rope route starts.

From here one has a great view. Today, we decided not to make it. Instead we went deeper into the barranco. There was supposed to be a pool and a waterfall and due to the hot weather we had a good motivation to find it.

On our way we saw lots of interesting plants.
