In the afternoon we arrived in Florence. We stayed at hotel B&B Repubblica. The hotel is situated in the city center and therefore a good place to explore the city.

We absolutely wanted to go to the place where all the famous photos of Florence where taken. So we asked the friendly staff at the hotel and they explained to us that we have to cross the river and then go up a hill to a car park. So we crossed the bridge which has some houses and stores on it, mostly jewellery is sold there and started to walk up the hill. It is really worth going up there, because the view of the city is just great! There were many many people and also some live music. When you are there it is worth to visit the garden with lots of different roses and also the garden with irises (they only bloom a few weeks a year and we were there during the time!). In the evening we enjoyed some good pasta.

On the Internet we found some nice looking photos of Strasbourg and because it is not too far away we decided to spend one day there during our Christmas vacation.

In Strasbourg we walked around the city and enjoyed the sunshine. We even had some crepes on the Christmas market. The Christmas market is open until New Year which was a bit strange. Strasbourg has many nice looking frame houses and you can walk along the river. There are many small lanes.

In the evening we enjoyed a tarte flambee with a glass of wine. Afterwards we were surprised how nice the houses and bridges are illuminated when it is dark outside. It is really worth to walk around the city when it is dark outside.

When travelling from the Mediterranean Sea back to the Alps it is a good idea to stop in Lyon. From Marseille we took the TGV to Lyon. It was the first time on the TGV for us and it is really fast!

The first impression of Lyon was that it is also very noisy. We were not able to find a nice place to sit down and enjoy a coffee. Nevertheless after some walking around we were able to fine the old town. There were some really small street with nice restaurants and bars. We enjoyed a delicious crepes and ice cream there.

There is also a nice place to go up and have a great view above the city - the view is worth going up there during the day and night. Close to the top of the hill is also a theater which reminded us of Rome.

During the night all famous buildings were nicely lighted up and there were many people out in the old town so that it was not so easy to find a place to eat. In the end we ended up with a salad and crepes which was fine 😀

When we finished our hiking tour in Menton we decided to spend one day in Nice as it is a very popular city. Nice was very hot, noisy and full of people! We walked around and found one really nice place - close to the beach you can go up some stairs to a park from where you have a great view of the city and the beach! Nevertheless we were quite happy to leave Nice the next morning to continue our journey back to the Alps with a stopover in Lyon.

When the weather in the mountains changed to rain and storm we decided to take the bus to the next bigger city instead of sitting at a mountain hut. So we went to Cuneo! We found a cheap hotel and made some sightseeing. To me Cuneo seems similar to Turin – just smaller. There are piazzas, there is lots of traffic and the main shopping streets are covered by big roofs. So we could walk through half the city even if it was raining or when the sun is burning from the sky :)
